Having a baby brings joy, excitement, and sometimes fear about how to pay for all the associated expenses. All that cute baby gear can definitely add up, but there are ways to save money when shopping for the things your little one needs.

If you have a limited budget, make a list of the gear you need before heading out to your local baby store. That way you can prioritize the items you really need, versus what's cute and trendy. Use the following tips to find bargains on baby supplies.

1. Check with friends and family for baby gear they're no longer using.

Chances are, someone you know has a crib, high chair, stroller, clothing, or other items tucked away in an attic or closet that they no longer use. Just spend some time checking the recall list at recalls.gov to make sure there are no safety issues with any used items.

2. Shop consignment sales.

Consignment sales often have goods that are like new, sometimes even new with tags still attached. Clothing at these sales can be an exceptionally good buy, as many babies outgrow items too quickly for them to become worn. Consignment sales also have toys, books, bedding, and other equipment. Look for shops dedicated to consignment as well as seasonal sales held at churches, schools, community centers, and other local venues.

3. Sign up for a baby registry.

If this is your first baby, friends and family will likely be more than willing to purchase gifts to help you get started. Include basics such as diapers, onesies, and pajamas in several sizes since babies grow fast. Avoid adding unnecessarily expensive items such as designer strollers that are out of your friends' price. Close friends will often pool their resources to purchase larger items such as strollers or car seats.

4. Shop online to compare prices and find coupons.

At times you can find cheaper prices for the same item on retailers' websites than if you visit their stores. You also may be able to get free shipping if you spend a certain dollar amount. Sign up for mailing lists and store loyalty cards at your favorite retailers for special discounts and advance notice of sales.

5. Avoid buying too much.

Only buy age-appropriate toys and equipment when you need them. Too many parents think they have to stock up on gear that their child may not need for years. Stop to consider whether your newborn needs it before you buy it.

6. Look for seasonal sales at your favorite baby store.

Items are always marked down at the end of the season to clear space for new inventory. Get in the habit of watching newspaper circulars and mailings to stay abreast of big sales, and to find coupons for extra savings.

7. Use freecycle.org to search for clothing, toys, and other items.

Freecycle is a community of people who give away free stuff to cut down on goods going to landfills. Freecycle is free to join, and there are groups all over the world. Visit freecycle.org to find one near you.

Another place to search for baby gear is a local baby expo. These events often have workshops for new and expecting parents, as well as freebies.
