The idea of being on mission or being missional is not in and of itself a new concept. But for whatever reason, be it a greater level of compassion, greater means, the moving of the Holy Spirit, a growing disparity between haves and have nots,or a re-awakening to cause-generated activity following decades of consumerism and self-indulgence there appears to be a growing and active interest in social justice and activism or being missional. For generations, being on mission typically meant single events or life-long commitments to missionary work in the mission field. Today, however, missional is more closely aligned with a lifestyle, a heart for people, and a mind set in the image of Jesus and His charges to take care of the poor, the disenfranchised, and less-fortunate. In short, a missional life is about living in significance and passion. The process of becoming missional begins with surrender and ends in life-stewardship. Its trail winds through through the heart, our own comfort zones, the dead areas of our existence, and culminates in the vision God has given us for our lives.
