UNTO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH
Jesus, for the vast majority of His life, never traveled outside of a one-hundred-mile radius from where He was born. Yet His name is spoken and known in every corner of the earth. The Gospel on the Ground is the story of how Jesus’s message of hope and reconciliation spread from Jerusalem, and it’s the story of how it is still happening today.
Come along with Kristi McLelland in this seven-session study for teen girls as she unpacks the life of the early church in the book of Acts and shows us that the kingdom of God is always on the move.
Video Sessions
- Session 1 (9:16)—In this introductory session, author Kristi McLelland unpacks Acts 1:8 and Jesus’ promise that His followers would take the good news of the gospel to the ends of the earth. She also explains the First Century Jewish relationship between the Rabbi and disciple and how Jesus taught His followers to live life the way He did.
- Session 2 (10:15)—In Session 2, we dive into the story of Pentecost in Acts 3 as understood through a Middle Eastern lens. Kristi reminds us that much like a mustard seed, the kingdom of God is on the move, growing and spreading out to every tribe, tongue, and nation on earth.
- Session 3 (8:34)—In our study of the early church and the Book of Acts, a deeper knowledge of the Roman Empire will illuminate our understanding of the context of Scripture. In Session 3, Kristi contrasts the Roman Empire, the empire of entertainment that appeals to the worldly desires, with the Kingdom of God, a kingdom of celebration that leads to ultimate fulfillment and joy.
- Session 4 (8:56)—In Session 4, we continue to discuss how the members of the early church set themselves apart in the way they loved others, their refusal to worship the emperor and their willingness to lay down their lives for the kingdom of God. Kristi reminds us to be people with eyes open twice, a hopeful embodiment and manifestation of the reality of the Kingdom of Abundance in an Empire of Scarcity.
- Session 5 (9:09)—In a Roman world that was divided by power and prestige, the early church stood out for their unity across class and race as the wealthy elite shared table fellowship with slaves. More than that, members of the early church sacrificed to make sure others had what they needed, to the praise and honor of God. In Session 5, Kristi challenges us to model that same Christ-centered unity in our own homes and use our kitchen tables to welcome others so we can share the love of God with them.
- Session 6 (11:49)—As we trace the progression of the early church in the Book of Acts, we see that Jesus’ followers were scattered throughout the First Century world. When they couldn’t share space together, these church members shared communal prayer and fasting practices no matter where they lived. Kristi encourages us to practice similar rhythms as well, as a way to embody the way of the early church.
- Session 7 (9:21)—In the 7th and final session, Kristi explains how the testimony of Christians who have come before us, as seen in Hebrews 11, and the eternal hope we have in Christ fuel a love for God and help us press forward in passing the good news of His Kingdom along to others. She reminds us that God is preparing a place for us in heaven where we'll enjoy Him for all eternity—the hope of glory that spurred on the early church and beckons us to obey God even to this day.
